Ethics and Competencies of Counseling Persons with Chronic Illness/Pain


It’s a licensure renewal year! Get your synchronous ethics hours and learn how to ethically work with persons with chronic illness/pain. Approved by LPCAGA for 6 Ethics hours, this CE is designed for persons with chronic illness/pain in order to demonstrate some possible adaptations needed. Objectives include:

1) Advocacy

a) Analyze biases to improve clinical strategies, rapport, and engagement with chronic illness and chronic pain populations

b) Understand mental health-related risks of clients advocating for themselves in healthcare

c) Analyze ethical considerations for coordination of care with medical providers for clients with chronic illness and pain

2) Intersectionality

a) Define intersectionality

b) Understand health-related stigmas and risks of intersectional identities related to access to proper medical care.

c) Understand health-related risks of oppression, discrimination, and inequalities of intersectional identities navigating life with chronic illness and pain.

3) Competency of care

a) Understand level of risk for clients with chronic pain and illness and protective factors for comorbid grief, trauma, depression, anxiety, and suicidality

b) Analyze ethical considerations for treatment of clients with chronic pain with regard to accessibility

c) Integrate specific strategies for mitigating risk and avoiding ethical problems
